Phone case from pockets

I haave started my bag but not completed it.  It's looking OK so far and I can already see ways of developing it further.
To keep things going, here is the first of two phone case designs using those tricky front pockets.  The advantage of using the pockets in a phone case is that it gives you a really useful place for those cables and earphones.  Not sure I could go back to using a case which does not have space for my earphones any more!
For an iphone (with cover) I use 6"x4"; for other phones 3"x5" or 3.5"x5.5" seem to work well.
You will need two rectangles of outer fabric and two of lining cut to this size, and a piece of elastic about 1/4" wide and 3" long. This will be a strap to stop your phone from slipping out of its case.
Put each lining with a piece of outer fabric, right sides together, and sew along the (top) short edge.  Before putting the pieces for the front together, sandwich the piece of elastic between them.
Sew a button on the back outer fabric, in the centre and about 1.5" down from the seam.

Put the two pieces together with the same fabrics right sides facing.  Sew from the bottom of one lining edge round the rectangle formed, leaving the short side of the lining unstitched.  Clip the corners of your main fabric if it is bulky.
Turn right side in through the gap in the bottom of the lining.
Turn those bottom lining edges under and stitch.  You can slip stitch by hand if you wish, or, if like me you hate handsewing, you can machine sew as close to the edge as possible.  (It's going to be inside the pouch so nobody will ever know!)
Cut a vertical line in the elastic, about 1/2" up from the end.  This will be your button hole.

Push the lining inside the pouch.

One finished phone case.  Enjoy!

  1. I just love how you use every scrap of the jeans, Caroline!!! Using the pocket works so well with the curved stitching becoming the focus on the phone case. Practical and looks great!!!
