Mini keyring purses

I found this design here and have had it stored on my pinterest pages for some time!  I finally got time to make (or adapt and make!) it.  A lovely little design to make, and a great addition to my purse range I think.

Mini keyring purse tutorial

This is another project that grew out of what I had in the house!  My sewing room was festooned with scraps of denim, too big to throw away but too small for existing projects.  While hunting through my zips box (actually more of a crate!) to find zips for a bag project I am planning, I came across about 20 tiny zips, no more than 3" long. And of course I had some split rings left over from recent key ring projects.  So I started thinking.
I came up with this:
It is hard to get an idea of the scale, but the purse is no more than 2" square.  I think this would be really useful for children who need to take bus fare to school - with a clip you could easily attach it to a belt loop - or to keep the car park change or trolley coin in.

Here is how I made them:
I cut a strip of fabric the width of the zip and twice as long as the zip.
I sewed the zip to one short edge of the fabric:
and then to the other edge:
Opening the zip, I put the loop of ribbon, with the split ring attached, inside the purse, and sewed across the short edge catching the ribbon in the seam.  I turned and sewed back the same way for strength.
I then sewed across the other short edge.
After clipping the corners (as shown above - it makes the corners of the finished back much neater) I turned the purse the right way in.
A simple, quick project; I now have a stack of these ready to add to stock.

More monster purses

This is a different design.  It was a variation on the wallet purse featured earlier - straightforward to make as it is unlined.  These purses made use of some of the reclaimed zips I was given by a good friend.  I love the effect of a mouth that the zips give.

Owl purses

I was told at a recent sale that owls are very "in" at the moment.  I can certainly see that I sell plenty of owl themed items.  This month I have restocked my owl coin purses to keep up with the trend.

You can find a tutorial for these purses here if you would like one for yourself.  You are welcome to make them to sell but if you do, please consider making a donation to The Sure Foundation (paypal link on the side bar).

Wallet style purses

These are such simple purses to make, and great for boys.  I used an 8.5" x 6" rectangle, choosing pieces of denim with interesting stitching on them.  After sewing a 6" zip to the short ends of the rectangles, I sewed the sides up with the zip in the middle, just as for the boxy purses.  However, in that case the purses were then completed!

Penguin purses

Another novelty coin purse design - I have been catching up on these while the embroidery machine is out of action.  These are simple to make. They have a basic construction of three 4" squares each of denim and lining.  I curve the base of one of the squares to make the head / flap.  Before starting construction I applique eyes and the white body and add the velcro for the fastening.
I then sew round the sides and curved edge of the flap, sewing it to the lining. I clip the edges, turn it the right way out and topstitch.
I then sew together the body part with velcro and one lining along the top edge.  sandwiching the head between the other body pieces (same fabric types facing). Open these out and put the two pieces together, same fabrics matched.  Sew round the resulting piece, leaving the bottom edge of the lining open for turning.
Turn right way in and sew up the lining before pushing the lining inside the main body.
There's a tutorial with pictures for the monkey purse (made in the same way) here if these instructions don't make sense to you!
